Wendy centres her research on the role of the immune system in reproductive health. Wendy’s research focuses on how we might be able to use the body’s own the immune system to destroy cancer. Cancer cells are very devious in that they can control the functions of the body’s immune cells, which would normally kill cancerous cells. Wendy is studying a particular type of immune cell called a macrophage, which is believed to be heavily involved in cancer growth. By studying normal mammary gland development side by side with breast cancer, Wendy hopes to understand how these macrophages have been deceived into helping the tumour to grow and escape into the circulation.
