Dr Angela Spence

Dr Angela Spence AIPS 2024 WA Young Tall Poppy

As an exercise and sport scientist, with expertise in how exercise affects the heart and arteries, Dr Angela Spence’s research has reshaped the field of exercise-induced cardiac adaptation. This has led to new ways of thinking and informed clinical practice guidelines and recommendations. Her current research program aims to address the knowledge gap in women’s heart health and female athlete performance. Studies include how female athletes’ hearts adapt to chronic exercise, appreciating the complex interplay with hormones and ageing. She also contributes to gender-tailored health interventions, athlete sleep behaviour research, and research on cardiorespiratory outcomes following ultra-distance swimming. Angela is passionate about gender equity, from correcting the male-bias in exercise science research, to advocating for women to pursue careers in sport science, she actively promotes inclusivity in science and sport.
