Dr Simone Deegan, Flinders University, is at the forefront of research into youth crime, including serious repeat offending, juvenile homicide, life sentences and the effectiveness of prisons and parole.
Her research not only supplies many needed facts, but it also provides a framework for better understanding the young people themselves, for intelligently moving forward with rehabilitation, and – most importantly – for reducing violence in future generations. This includes research and evaluation relating to social service improvement, systems reform and social policy.
Simone is the winner of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology (ANZSOC) Christine M Alder Book Prize for the most outstanding contribution to criminology and the ANZSOC New Scholar Prize for best publication. She has also practised law in the criminal justice system and is the former Principal Training Centre Advocate for all South Australian children detained in youth justice settings.
