Dr Amy Moss’ research aims to address the environmental and economic burden of food waste by enabling its utilisation as a feed for poultry.
In Australia, 7.3 million tonnes of food is disposed in landfill p/a, costing $20 billion and contributing >5% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
A pilot study Dr Moss completed in 2021 and published in the esteemed journal Scientific Reports demonstrated that food waste could be used as a feed source for poultry. However, a greater understanding of fat and carbohydrate metabolism coupled with optimisation of the food waste diet is required. To explore this further, Dr Moss was awarded an ARC DECRA to continue this research for the next three years and tackle this environmental and economic problem.
