Dr Amy Dawel

Amy Dawel

Senior Lecturer and Director of the ANU Emotions Lab in the School of Medicine and Psychology at The Australian National University

What is the problem you are trying to address?
Trying to feel happy all the time is like looking at a rainbow and trying to see just one colour: you are missing out. People who embrace the full rainbow of their emotions can use them to their advantage.

What is your research doing to solve this problem?
The goal of Dr Dawel’s research program is to help people build rich and nuanced emotional lives, to sustain mental, social, and physical health. Her research explores how people manage and communicate their emotions. Since the start of the pandemic, Dr Dawel has led a large interdisciplinary team to understand the psychological impacts on Australian’s emotional and mental health.

Public outreach or science communication outputs.
Dr Dawel’s research during the pandemic has been used to inform government decision making and promote community mental health, including Webinars to inform the public about practices to support individual and family emotional health during lockdown. Her work has also featured in The Conversation.

Dr Dawel completed her PhD in 2015 at The Australian National University. She is currently a Senior Lecturer and Director of the ANU Emotions Lab in the School of Medicine and Psychology at The Australian National University.
