Dr Olivier Van Aken’s research focuses on how plant mitochondria respond to environmental stresses.Plants have evolved intricate signalling systems that can sense changes in the environment, and launch effective stress responses that allow plants to survive.
Olivier’s work has identified several important genes that can help plants endure prolonged periods of drought or high salinity, and even microbial infections. His next step is to develop strategies to translate these improvements in plant stress resistance from the lab to the field.
Olivier has previously volunteered with Scientists in Schools, been an active participant in public outreach and Open Days, and was involved in a Speed Dating with Scientists event for National Science Week.
