Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis affect nearly one in two older adults. Dr Antony uses various imaging techniques such as MRI to explore the early markers and identify the modifiable risk factors for the development of these diseases. Previously he had found that children with higher fitness levels have more knee cartilage regardless of adult fitness levels and may protect against knee osteoarthritis.
His current research is focused on targeting bone and joint fluid pathology of knee osteoarthritis and back pain, and will test the effects of existing osteoporosis therapies and krill oil. If successful, it will have the potential to slow progression to joint replacement through an easy method of implementation.
Benny is an active participant of the ‘Young Tassie Scientist’ program, giving presentations to students about medical research and has also taken part in a number of community events such as Agfest, Wellness Expo, UTAS Research week.
The Australian Rheumatology Association and American Society for Bone Mineral Research honoured him with Young Investigator Award based on the novelty of my findings and the effective oral presentation. He was also selected as the state finalist by FameLab International and first prizewinner for 5 minute rapid fire research presentation.
