Brain swelling (cerebral oedema) and elevated intracranial pressure are life-threatening compilations of stroke and occur as a result of blood-brain barrier dysfunction. These complications are associated with death and significant disability. Dr Turner has identified a drug that prevents the brain from swelling, a treatment that may greatly improve survival and quality of life outcomes following stroke.
Renee has previously been a finalist in the Fresh Science Awards, was selected to present the Australian bid for future Brain conferences in Australia and does expert commentary for media. In 2014 she was a co-convenor of the Kids Navigate Neuroscience event for 7-12 year olds during Science Week
Dr Turner was awarded her PhD from the University of Adelaide in 2007 and is currently the Head of the Translational Stroke Group at the University of Adelaide.
