Dr Pumpa’s work endeavours to use research on athletes to inform quality of life for people with chronic disease. Her major project involves exercise therapy for breast cancer survivors, showing that weight lifting after treatment can not only increase their muscle strength but can also improve their quality of life. She is also developing effective exercise for people with chronic pulmonary diseases.

Kate is a regular presenter at highly regarded academic national and international conferences, and is also the expert fitness advisor for Women’s Health Magazine and also regularly features on Canberra’s ABC radio. She is regularly asked to talk about the benefits of exercise at public forums for groups such as the Lymphedema Service at Calvary Hospital, the Lung Foundation Australia and Dragons Abreast. In 2012, Kate was the selected ACT representative for Fresh Science.
