Dr Paul Gardner-Stephen – Humanitarian Communication
Research Fellow, School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics, Flinders University
Dr Paul Gardner-Stephen works in the field of humanitarian communication. He is developing open-source software that lets mobile phones talk directly to each other – instead of via phone towers – a system known as mesh telephony. His research was the first to successfully generate a widely useful mesh telephony service that could be applied to people who live in isolation, poverty, disaster or conflict-affected areas. The service has been successfully demonstrated in the Outback, deep underground and on a simulated disaster response exercise with the New Zealand Red Cross.
