Research Field: Conservation
Dr Mills’ research involves systematic conservation planning with a particular interest in coastal ecosystems such as mangroves. This systematic planning involves engagement with all stakeholders from government agencies to villagers and the use of available science to inform resource management decisions. This research provides strategic decisions on where and how to protect coastal ecosystems so they can provide benefits now and for future generations.
Morena has engaged with the community in many forms from the Melbourne aquarium to visiting local
communities in Fiji and the Solomon Islands. Currently one of her projects is using Earthwatch volunteers who spend 1-2 weeks involved in environmental science. She has also been involved in a collaboration with art companies in Brazil developing an educational art exhibition and play about aquatic ecosystems and how to live more sustainable lives, reaching up to 1000 children aged between 7 and 13 years old.
