Research Field: Dementia and Ageing
Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that will triple in prevalence in Australia by 2050.
Dr Low’s research focuses on dementia risk reduction, decreasing behavioural symptoms and minimising the psychosocial effects of the disease. She has showed that humour can lower aggression and agitated behaviour amongst people in nursing homes and is investigating how a better understanding of dementia among friends of patients so they will remain near them.
Lee-Fay’s research is slowly helping to decrease stigma about dementia by informing community education about the condition. She is particularly passionate about finding new ways to keep people with dementia at home, happy and safe, rather than having to enter a nursing home. She is also a member of several government committees dedicated to developing policy for older people, particularly those with dementia from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities.
