Dr Dominic Thewlis’ research explores the important relationship between the mechanics of a joint, the progression of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis and the effectiveness of joint replacements. He has developed a number of unique methods to combine medical imaging data with traditional biomechanical data to simulate joint function with high fidelity. Using advanced computer simulations he has recently begun to investigate if biomechanics can partially explain why joints wear out. Understanding these factors will, in the long, term help us to design better joint replacements and reduce the impact of osteoarthritis.
