Dr Matt Brearley

National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre Royal Darwin Hospital

Matt has achieved a great deal for those engaging in physical activity in hot conditions. He pioneered the collection of core temperature in the field using radio telemetry pills imported from the US.  To ensure the safety and maximise performance of athletes and others working in tropical field conditions, he quantified their responses, such as body temperature and fluid losses, in tropical field conditions. Additional research assessed a variety of novel cooling methods in simulated and field conditions to recommend appropriate and practical strategies for athletes and occupational groups who need to perform in the heat.
