Dr Darren Goossens

ACT Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year 2010
(Winner of the ANU Medal for the ACT Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year)

Materials Science
The Australian National University

Dr Goossen’s research is all about better understanding the interactions between molecules in crystals and how these can lead to better potential uses. These include the medical properties of pharmaceuticals, materials used in energy conversions and an increase in computer storage through magnetic materials. He makes use of the OPAL Nuclear Reactor and ANSTO and the Australian Synchrotron and has had input into the specification of their instrumentation.

Darren has represented his expertise at conferences and also at theĀ Science Meets Parliament day for several years. He has presented workshops for high school teachers in physics and published cartoons for a physics textbook as well as writing fiction parodies of scientific and historical articles.
